Need to stock up on the Food

by Jess

As a mom I want to make sure my little one as well as my family is going to be ok when not if something happens.  By happens this could mean that theres a snow storm and the power if off for a few days.  At this point think of what is in your pantry – Do you have enough food and water to sustain you for like 5 days straight without going to the store?? Most probably don’t.  We live from grocery store visit to grocery store visit with our food supply.  Which is why each time there is a threat of a few inches of snow theres  a rush on the bread, milk and egg isles at the grocery store.  I will admit at this point my stock is lacking.  My excuse currently is space.  We are still in our starter home (outgrew that fast once the little guy was born) so there isn’t much space to store food here.  Once we move into our new house the Mama is stocking up!! By stocking up I don’t mean for the 5 day power outage.  If you are interested in starting to stock up on your food supply check out www.thesurvivalmom.com her site is awesome, has a great area for starters and has been featured all over the prepper world.

Truffles

by Jess

I have not posted to my blog in Months, I mean Months!! I think about it often but do nothing.  I think hmmm that would make an interesting blog post but do nothing.  So tonight I am posting darn it!!

This is what happened to me today.  My son was playing in his room with his little action figures (he is super into super heros right now), so I grabbed me a nice warm cup of coffee and a truffle from DeBrands chocolates.  As I am getting ready to sit down my phone rings so I sit down the coffee and the truffle then go to answer the phone and talk in the other room.  When I am done on the phone I walk back into the living room to find my little munchkin with a chocolate covered mouth saying “yummy mama, you chocolate is so good.  Thank you for sitting it on the couch for me, I like it.”.  He literally had wolfed down my delicate hazel nut cream filled chocolate truffle!!!! Wahhhhhh!!!  I just had to laugh what else can you do.

So that is my cute kid story of the day.  I hope to get back into my blog postings.

Have a good night!!

Sweeper Fighting Pirate!

by Jess

Today W and I had a great and super fun packed day!! We went to our cousins baby shower with my sister which is his favorite person in the entire world.  I swear I think she tops me on his list!!  He made a ton of little boy friends while there (so cute). They ran around in the back of the room having so much rowdy fun.  I have an awesome family so no one seemed to mind their rucus making!!

After the shower we all hung out at my house for a bit, decided we were starving so we went to a local restaurant.  The normal family room was packed so they put us in the back family room.  I was so stoked! Which is weird I know, but W had not had a nap yet so I was a little leery about being in a room full of innocent people, lol!! Those with crazy children can feel for me on that one!!  Anyways the back family room was awesome! There were 2 car video games that he sat in and pretend drove, and there was a pool table so that entertained him for a bit as well!! Super day and even super evening.

So on to the point of my post!! After having such a great day I decided, since dinner was over and my hubby wouldnt be home until 10ish, that I would clean house.  So first I grab the magic carpet dust (arm and hammer good smelly stuff) and sprinkle the carpet.  W decides this is pixy dust (I swear he is so obsessed with Jake and the Neverlnd Pirates) and starts having his stuffed lions eat it so they can fly around.  Very adorable.  The magic dust (my name)/Pixie dust (W’s name) needs to sit for about 15 to really get the good smelly stuff absorbed before I sweep.  So I run around like a crazy women cleaning the rest of the house and picking up the majority of my pirates toys.  15mins are up and it’s time to sweep.  By this time he has donned his pirate hat and has his pirate sword in one hand and fake hook in the other (He is going to be a pirate for Halloween and has already broke into his costume). I turn the sweeper on and he starts batteling it with his hook and pirate sword saying Aha I a pirate, I get hook.  Then “mama, you hook”.  So I being the super cool and fun mom that I am played along by saying “aha I mama pirate I get you toes! He says “No mama, you hook, I the pirate”.  So i then  say (geesh, this kid is so bossy) “Ok I hook, I get you toes Aha”.  He is loving this and seriously sword and hook fights the sweeper the entire time I was sweeping the floor.

I love having a little boy!! We have so much fun together and his imagination just amazes me!!

Happy October!

by Jess

So it is October 1st! Woohoo!! It is officially the fall season! I know this because outside is freaking cold!  I love the fall, my favorite part is all of the beautiful changing colors of our leaves.  Pretty, Pretty!!

I also love the festivals! This year my husband has worked during most of them but i’ve tried to take W to everyone!! Yesterday was our neighboring towns fair and we enjoyed some kiddie rides and won some fair fish!!  I’ll post some pics later of my son riding the rides and holding his fishies!!  My little brother just informed me that his fish that he won at the fair just went belly up after 8 years of being a faithful little companion, so sad! Can you believe that little fair fish lasted 8 years!! I was a little worried last night when we were setting up the tank that if one of them was belly up in the morning, how in the heck am I going to explain that to the little guy!! Good thing there’s a pet store down the road I think i’ll just pay the ten cents or whatever to replace the little guy!! Feeder fish are so darn cheep!! Those fair people make a killing!!

Today we are going to the Apple Festival that is held a few towns over.  I love this festival and look forward to going to it every single year!! My hubby can’t come he is working today so it’s just me and the munchkin.  I think my sister may accompany us, but I’m not sure yet.  This festival is awesome! It has all kinds of yummy food, that is made the old fashion way (primitive festival).  There are amazing crafts made by local vendors (gotta support those locals).  I’m looking for some cute fall decor and I know i’ll find just the right things there.

Don’t forget to check out any Child ID kit’s while you are at your local festivals!! Typically put on by your sheriff’s departments.

What is your favorite thing about October?

I love purses!

by Jess

I love purses – If you know me then you know that I have a closet for my purses and I can sell lots at a garage sale each year and not put a dent in my purse hoard.  Anyways some day, some day,  I would love to open a purse boutique.  I think that would be awesome, fun and right up my ally as my dream job away from the world of preparedness (I love the world of preparedness so the purse idea must be pretty awesome).  Anyways that way off in the future and just a thought at this moment.

My question is…How in the heck do you find reliable distributors or wholesalers for purchasing purses?? I’m thinking I would like to sell a small lot of inventory at my moms studio or just to some close friends.  But I don’t want to sell crap, I don’t buy crappy cheap purses so I don’t want to sell them.

Any hints suggestions or ideas on where I can find a reliable distributor please let me know!!

I love the city!!

by Jess

Yesterday I had to work in the city again for an all day meeting.  I dislike leaving my son and being so far away from home, but I am so much in love with the feeling of being right smack dab in the big down town!

Typically I leave the night before and stay in a nice hotel just 1 block away from my work.  I arrive around 8ish, check in and then check their movie listing (they always have awesome movies that have not come out on DVD yet, something I look forward to every trip), brew up some decaf coffee, then just have some quiet time.  Very nice!

The problem with going the night before is it breaks my heart having to say good night to my son over the phone.  I hate not being able to tuck him in, read him his favorite stories and making sure he has all his lovies in bed with him.

So I chose to wake up at the rooster crow of dawn and drag myself to the big city.  I am not a morning person in the least.  I was talking to my best friend on the way home and her comment to me was “wow, im shocked you were able to get out of bed that early”.  Yep, it’s that bad.  Anyways, I woke up at 5 got dressed and performed and all other morning beautifying routines necessary for a big business trip. Then I started driving.  The sun was not even up yet! I had to stop for gas, and I was shocked at the amount of people that were out and about at 6am.  The amount of people that were driving around, walking around and entering and exiting the gas station was astounding.  These people are crazy!!  As I was pumping my gas and looking at all of the probably normal people who get up every day at the rooster crow of dawn and drive their happy tired selves to work, I popped a 5 hour energy shot becaust that was the only thing that was going to get this mama through the next 3 hours of driving time that I had. Thank the good lord above I don’t have to do this every day!!

Anyways again – I’m rambling – I do that.  I love the city! I love the feeling I get when I am driving and I am 1 turn away from seeing the huge sky-scrappers up close.  I make the turn and voila it’s my life I never had but probably would have if I hadn’t decided to stay in my small town and be super happy. I get to use these 1 sometimes 2 times per month trips to the big city to be my ulter ego super chic business woman. Turns out I was an hour early for my meeting.  I gave myself extra time for traffic delays, etc.  So I park my car at the mall shopping lot so I can window shop a bit on my way to work.  I’m starving and my energy shot is starting to make me shaky so I walk to the Qdoba that has a huge sign that says open for breakfast, why not.  I pop in the lady is super nice, says hi and helps me decide what i want for breakfast (again, not a morning person so not familiar with the breakfast menu at Qdoba). I get my breakfast (quesadilla-chicken, scrambled eggs, tomato salsa and cheese, so yummy) and find a seat that is directly in front of a huge window that is looking out onto the street.  This is perfect for me.  I get to do my favorite thing…watch all of the super cool looking business people walk themselves to their jobs wearing their super chic outfits.  I’m telling you I was in heaven, this probably sounds weird but I love to look at their fashion choices.  These women wear beautiful shoes that probably kill their feet but who cares they look awesome! I make mental notes as to what  I should do to tweak my wardrobe to look more fashionable in my small town.

Not much but ramblings in this post but I just wanted to let you all know how much of a city lover I am for 1 maybe 2 days out of each month. I get to be a super business woman who wears fashionista business type clothing.  Then the magical aura wears off and I am desperately trying to beat the traffic and the clock on my 3 hour drive home to get to my son 1 minute earlier than the GPS says because I just want to squeeze his tiny body and hear him say “I miss you mama”.  He makes my world go round.

Seeded Zucchini Bread

by Jess

So a few days ago I was at the store and saw some zucchini.  It made me think of the awesome bread my mom used to make so I bought 2 of them.  I got home and called my mom for her awesome tried and true delicious recipe.  Well I just finally found the time to make my mom’s zucchini bread this evening.  I was so excited and couldn’t wait to taste it!!!

So I start by grating the zucchini.  It was super duper runny and watery.  I thought hmmm I seriously don’t remember this stuff being this watery, but maybe mom strained it and I didn’t realize it. So the red flag of warning something is wrong quickly disappeared with that self made explanation for the abundance of water in my grated zucchini bowl.  Then as I was measuring the 2 cups of needed grated zucchini I noticed some seeds and thought hmmm I don’t ever remember mom’s zucchini bread having seeds in it.  She must have bought seedless zucchini (i’ll add that I am obviously not well versed in veggies and if you can get seedless watermelon why not seedless zucchini right, wrong).  So red flag of warning once again is lowered with that small justification.

Move on to tasting the batter – does not taste like mom’s but decide that must be because I used the with seed zucchini.

I take the bread out of the oven and the house smells nice with the baked bread and a hint of cinnamon smell.  I love that smell!!

I let the bread cool and then cut my son and myself a yummy warm slice.  I sit down to eat it and it doesn’t taste like my  mom’s zucchini bread in the least and those darn seeds keep popping up in every single bite.  Pretty soon I have 10 seeds on my plate and I look really really close at them……. and I realize that I baked 2 whole loaves of Cucumber Bread!!!! I burst out laughing to the point of tears.  HILARIOUS!!!  I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.  I needed a good laugh like that one!! Good laughs like does the soul good!!

I mean they look so close don’t they!!

Apparently I do not have the ability to determine what is a zucchini and what is a cucumber at the grocery store.  It would probably help if I looked at the sign above the veggies but I really thought I knew my stuff.

Lesson Learned…Check signs above veggies before purchase and keep in mind that not every veggie comes with a seedless version!!

Locked Out

by Jess

I have to share with you what happened to me today.  W is tall enough now that he can reach the lock on the sliding glass door.  So this morning I was outside barefoot and in my robe letting our dog out to go potty.  W tried to pull the sliding glass door open I turn around and he is struggling.  Well I didnt want him outside anyways so I didnt go back and help him.  He thought the door was locked so he thought he needed to unlock it….. Not good i hear the switch and go ohhh crapppp!! I’m locked out of my house at the rooster crow of dawn, barefoot, in my night gown and robe with no way of getting back in.  My husband had already left to go golfing for the day, and like a good mom I made sure the front door was securly locked so my little guy couldnt wonder outside while I was letting the dog out.  I was in shock!! I did not want to go over to the neighbors and ask for their phone so I could tell my husband to turn around and let me in the house. That would have mortified me.

So as all of these panicked thoughts are running through my head my little guy is still tugging on the door because he desperately wants out so he can help his mama with the puppy.  How is it that they can still be absolutely adorable to us even when we are in these types of situations (I swear its an instinctive survival tactic, so we don’t tear them to pieces)!!!

Idea – eager to come out child might be able to help eager to get in mama.  So i tell him to push the lock up, and he pulls it down.  Then I keep trying to tell him to push it up towards my hand and it’s just not working.  Then I realize that he is not tall enough to push the lock up (he can lock it easily but the unlocking just isnt working).  So I tell him to go grab a dinner chair (It’s like inches away from him) and have him pull it up to the door.  The whole time im giving him these instructions im praying that he doesn’t injure himself (it really was a bit scary). This is where I was holding my  breath, remember he is 2, I asked him to climb up on the chair (our chairs are the big tall pub chairs with backs on them) but to be very careful. He is loving it because I never let him climb up on the chairs.  Then I asked him to push the lock up and voila!!! Mama is back inside!!
Whew!!! That was the scariest 5 minutes of my day!!  I am just so relieved that he is so good at following instruction!! Mickey Mouse was on the TV in the other living room and i was certain I was going to be ditched at the door for him!!  I really really did not want to go over to the neighbors to ask for help, that would have been so emabarassing.  It would have been fine if I had been dressed and presentable, but we just literally got out of bed!!

Have you every been locked out of the house by your little one??

Emergency Kit

by Jess

I have been thinking of writing an emergency kit post for awhile now.  Basically since I opened this blog the words emergency kit have been on my mind.  This article will detail a “quick kit” not a detailed and sustainable emergency kit.  Nothing that is expected to sustain you for 2 weeks but something that we can throw together quickly now with a small bit of money or items that we currently have around the house so that we are prepared now.

3 Day Quick Kit

  • Water – 1 gallon per person per day.  Expect to have a 1/2 gallon for personal hygiene and food preparation and a 1/2 gallon for drinking per person.  Also think about what your pets might need in terms of water as well.
  • Food – Non perishable – easy to prepare (don’t forget a spare can-opener).  You can keep rotating your supply of canned goods, dry mixes and other staple items on your shelves.
  • If you have a baby – Make sure you have their supplies stocked up. Extra large can of formula that you replace every other week when you run out of your open can and just always have one or two as a backup.  Diapers and baby food.
  • Flash Light
  • Extra Batteries
  • Battery Radio – Put on your shopping list a NOAA weather radio.
  • First Aid kit – They sell these little things all over the place.
  • Multipurpose tool
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items – AKA – TAMPONS Ladies!!! Wouldn’t want to be snowed in during a blizzard and have Aunt Flo come knocking on your door!! Stock up after each visit at-least have a box in reserves!!
  • Family Emergency Contact info.  If your cell phone dies do you know your moms number? Maybe you know your moms but do you know your uncles or your grandma’s?? Keep a current and up to date list of your families phone numbers. (P.S. I know that if our cell phones have died many of us have lost connection to the outside world. This is why you should purchase the NOAA weather radio, they will keep you up to date on what is going on.)
  • Maps of your area!! Google Earth and MapQuest might not be assessable to you.  If you have a GPS then your car will take care of the charging for you.  It is a good idea to have a map of your area so that if roads are blocked by debris or barricades you can figure out how to get to where you need to go.
  • Pet Food!!
Here is a bit more info on the NOAA Weather Radio.  I believe that every home should have one of these. From the NOAA site: “Working with the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) Emergency Alert System , NWR is an “All Hazards” radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages).”
This is a quick kit list it is not inclusive but will get you started so you have all of your supplies in one spot.  I will be adding to my emergency kit series within the next few weeks.  I hope this short list has given you some ideas on how you can prepare for being snowed in or stranded at the house for a few days.
If you have any items or suggestions please feel free to share!

Sentences

by Jess

My little guy is getting so good at saying sentences. I’m one proud mama! Today he has started this new one where he says “I yuv (love) you me!” which is adorable because i think he is asking me if i love him. Normally he just says “I yuv you”.  I always say “W, do you love me” and he will respond with “I yuv you mama”. So this new one includes the me at the end!

He also responds “nothin” in this cute little voice to many questions asked of him.  It is so darn cute.

“W, what are you doing” his response “nothin” with a little shoulder shrug.

“W, where are you going” his response “nothin” again with the shoulder shrug.

I love watching him learn new things!!

Do you have any first sentences stories?
